azulejos sant'ana

Azulejos - Ceramic Tiles

There are two locations for this famous Lisbon producer of handmade ceramics and tiles called “Azulejos”. Established in 1741, Sant’Ana keeps a showroom in Chiado where you will find a diverse selection, including pieces commissioned by some of Portugal’s most famous modern painters and ceramic artists. The other is the factory and showroom located between downtown Baixa and Belem, in the middle of the working class Ajuda neighborhood. It is worth a trip to Ajuda to see this 270 year old rustic ceramics factory in operation. The shop attached to the factory is not as impressive as the one they keep in Barrio Alto, but watching some of the finest ceramic painters in Europe, creating handmade designs and popular styles from the middle ages to the18th century is a treat for anyone who makes the journey to Sant’Ana’s factory.

Azulejos - Ceramic Tiles

In 1987 Ratton Ceramics started inviting famous Portuguese painters and designers to use the “azulejo” as a new form of expression. Their goal was to renew the rich Portuguese tradition of tile painting without breaking with time honored technics, culture and way of living associated with this art from. The results have been stunning and their works are displayed around Lisbon in many public locations. A delightful re-invention of the azulejo has been started by this innovative shop. Their gallery has azulejos for sale by top Portuguese and international artists like Paula Rego and Lourdes Castro to name a few.

Azulejos - Ceramic Tiles

A huge selection of vintage displayed on simple pine shelves inside this new shop in Lisbon. The Cortiço brothers inherited the Cortiço & Netos business from their grandfather and have opened a new store in Lisbon’s historic Mouraria quarter.  Inside you will find a 30-year-old stockpile, which encompasses discontinued tiles from the 1960s up to products from the present day. The brothers have also expanded the family business to include a range of tiled homeware items. Long wooden boxes on a table in front of the counter allows customers to flip through tile samples like vinyls in a record store. They work in cooperation with Portuguese universities to promote research into the history of tile-making.
