A unique Portuguese music genre that can be traced to the 1820s in Portugal, but with much earlier origins. This form of song is usually linked to the Portuguese word saudade which symbolizes the feeling a permanent and irreparable loss, and its consequent life-lasting damage. Amalia Rodrigues, Carlos do Carmo, Mariza, Mafalda Arnauth, and Cristina Branco are amongst the most famous individuals associated with the genre. A visit to Lisbon would not be complete without experiencing a Fado concert. In the last decade, many new Fado venues have sprung up around the city, offering an evening of food and music that range from over-priced tourist-traps to authentic performance halls and traditional cuisine.
