This half-day excursion of the Lisboa Wine Region departs from Lisbon and heads towards the East coast, where we pass some of the "Westernmost Vineyards of Continental Europe". This is considered one of the most endangered wine-growing regions in the world and also one of Europe's best-kept secrets.
Once a major player in Portugal's wine industry, this sub-region of Lisboa has begun to enjoy a minor renaissance in the early 21st century among those who know Iberian wines.
The vineyards here are just a fraction of what they were 70 years ago and cannot compete with the mass-produced, fruity, oaky styles preferred by the majority of modern wine consumers. The terroir has a particular microclimate, with sandy-clay soils and proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, which leads many to comment on the sea's aromas and flavors prevalent in the wines.
During the vineyard tour, you will discover how winemakers can grow grapes in the sandy soil, and how vineyards in the area were saved from the Phylloxera parasite that ravaged Europe's vineyards in the late 19th century and has since affected every viticultural region on earth except this tiny part of Portugal.
These grapes near the coast are grown on the only surviving ungrafted, old-world vines in the world. They can produce robust, tannic reds from local grape varieties with delicious roundness and flavors of cassis, peaches, and apricots.
The wine-making estate we visited was founded by a Marquês at the beginning of the 17th century and was sold to the current eccentric family in 1879. This manor is a beautiful example of the construction of the epoch, with many original Portuguese elements.
During our visit, you will have a tour of the estate grounds before the wine tasting, which is accompanied by savory enchidos made by the family, local cheeses, slices of bread, and charcuterie.
Discover the original chapel with its ceiling frescoes. Wandering the estate’s gardens, there are sheep found grazing as part of their local cheese production, trellises adorned with blossom-covered vines, fruit trees, wildflowers, and a cork orchard where the family explains how their cork is harvested and made into bottle stoppers.
Hidden in the property’s garden, there are freshwater springs where visitors can enjoy a refreshing drink, and a large pond in a half-moon shape. At the center is a grotto decorated with Portuguese Azulejos (blue tiles) from 1740 with graceful allegorical figures depicting the Four Seasons.
